Hoyt Sherman Place
Hoyt Sherman Place is a stately Victorian house built in the 1850s and extended in 1870. It is located on the Des Moines River, which is probably derived from an earlier French name, named after the monks (meaning “river of the monks”), which probably adapts to the early French names for the river, meaning monks river. Hoyt Sherman Place was built in 1877 by prominent pioneer and businessman Hoyte Sherman and is one of three villas on his property.
Today, the attraction is registered in the National Register of Historic Places and hosts a variety of performing arts events such as concerts, lectures and exhibitions.
Des Moines Art Center
Designed by Eliel Saarinen in 1948, the Des Moines Art Center consists of a form that ends in a two-story extension. The art center has its roots in the early 20th century, when it was founded as a gallery space by the Association of Fine Arts of Des Moines. In the 1950s, the association expanded its personal art collection to include gallery spaces. It consisted of two buildings, one square and the other rectangular, both ending in two floors with annexes, each with a single entrance in the middle.
The architecture of the original museum wing was designed by Eliel Saarinen and completed in 1948. Take the time to admire works of Art Deco, Art Nouveau and Modernism, including works by artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Paul Gauguin, Henri Cartier-Bresson, John Singer Sargent, Frank Lloyd Wright and others, as well as works by contemporary artists.
The Des Moines Art Center is located just off Interstate I-235, on a gentle hill in the heart of downtown just north of Interstate 35. It is also just a few blocks from the University of Iowa and the Iowa State University campus. The main building of the museum and the adjacent museum wing were also built by the same architects who were responsible for the original museum building in Iowa City, Iowa, and the sister museum in Omaha.
